How Orthodontic Treatment Works
Orthodontic appliances can be made of metal, ceramic or plastic. They may be removable or they may be brackets bonded to the teeth. By placing a constant, gentle force in a carefully controlled direction, braces slowly re-align teeth to their correct and desired positions. This is a great time to wear braces! Gone are the days when a metal band with a bracket was placed around each tooth. You can choose brackets that are clear of metallic colour. You may have the option to choose the colour of the ties that hold the wire in brackets. Wires are also less noticeable than they used to be and the latest materials move teeth faster with less discomfort to patients.
Duration of Treatment
Treatment time typically ranges from 1 – 2 years, depending on the growth of the patient’s jaws and face and the severity of the problem at the start. Patients grow at different rates and will respond variously to orthodontic treatment, so the time to case completion may differ from the original duration estimate. The patient’s diligent use of any prescribed rubber bands or headgear is an important factor in achieving the most efficient treatment. Interceptive, or early treatment procedures, may take as little as 6 months.
Invisalign® and Invisalign Teen™
Consider Invisalign clear braces to get the beautiful straight teeth you’ve always wanted – without braces. A complimentary smile assessment can determine if Invisalign is right for you and as a bonus you’ll also be able to preview your new smile.
What is it?
Invisalign uses a series of invisible, removable, and comfortable aligners that no one can tell you are wearing. So you can smile more during treatment as well as after. Invisalign is made with 3-D computer imaging technology, and has used by more than 6 million patients worldwide. Our experts are certified and highly trained in treating patients using the Invisalign system.
Why would I want it?
Not only are the aligners invisible, they are fully removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment, plus brushing and flossing are no problem. They are also comfortable, with no metal to cause mouth abrasions during treatment. Invisalign also allows you to view your own virtual treatment plan when you start, so you can see how your straight teeth will look when your treatment is complete.
How does it work?
You wear each set of aligners for around 2 weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move – little by little and week by week until they have straightened to their final desired position. You’ll have appointments every 6 – 8 weeks to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned. Your total treatment time averages 9 – 24 months and the average number of aligners worn during treatment is between 18 and 30, but both can vary depending on patient requirements.
